Fighting Cold and Flu Season With A Healthy Balance

Let us start by saying, we are not medical experts or scientists.  However, Gateway Hills is an innovative health club comprised of a team of individuals that believe exercise is one element that is crucial to your overall health.  That being said, we don’t have in-house scientific research backing our beliefs, but we do have hours of extensive research with valid medical studies.  In this article, we’re taking a look at how exercise, along with other elements, may help to increase your immune system.

Cold and flu season

Generally, cold and flu season begins in early October and lasts through late May. According to MedlinePlus, the United States National Library of Medicine, “physical activity may help flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways.  This may reduce your chance of getting a cold, flu, or other illness.” During a time when respiratory concerns are at a height of public concern, this fact is crucial.

However, for many, this statement leads to the question of how much physical activity they are talking about?

How much moving is considered enough?

If routine exercise is not already part of your daily routine, there’s no need to freak out! In fact, we recommend taking things at your pace when starting your journey.

The American Heart Association recommends targeting at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week.  Although this sounds intimidating, going for a half-hour walk during your lunch break will bring you to their standards.  Beyond meeting physical requirements, the mid-day break is good for the mind.  Lunch breaks are meant as refreshers to finish your day out strong!

If possible, consider adding moderate muscle-strengthening two days a week to increase your overall benefits.  As always, start at a level in which you’re comfortable and gradually increase your time and intensity.

It comes down to balance

Your immune system is just that, a system.  Because your body’s immune system is not a single entity, it requires balance to function optimally.  Although exercise is imperative, other factors also need consideration.  Exercise, diet, stress, and age are all elements that affect your overall well-being.

By creating an individualized plan meeting your needs while working within your current parameters, you can set yourself up for a lifelong journey of success.
